Hello and welcome to my website, Country Comfort Recipes. My name is Laurie Hall and I am the author of the Sweet Blessing Cookbook Collection and I like to call myself the “Country Chef”. Although I do not have a degree stating that fact, I do have 41 years of experience in the kitchen (many of these kitchens were not mine) and have learned from the school of hard knocks where cooking and baking are the main courses of life. I grew up in a small farming community in western Nebraska where we enjoyed many of the local wares throughout the year. Farmers markets back then were truly that. Each week hard working people brought their “creations” for all to see. Fresh vegetables, fruits and homemade baked goods filled the tables. I can still recall the aroma as I strolled by, with my mouth watering; hoping Mom would buy my favorite.
Putting together inexpensive meals that taste good is not always easy and back when I was a child the same was very true. A lot of the recipes that I have collected over the course of my self embarked career of cooking have stemmed from just these sorts of households. Although I am not a country girl per say, I have always been a Country Girl at heart. Homemade food has a comfort all its own and can be a delight to create. One of the greatest blessings you will hear is when your child cleans their plate and asks “more please”. In this alone, you know you have done something amazing.
Having grown up in a German family, my meals as a child were very simple in nature. Things that most people would have turned up their noses at were my family’s favorites. Mom’s solution to any sleepover was a nice round of cabbage burgers and homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Although that would sound foreign to most people, it was everyday life for us. Of all the dinners that my mom prepared, my favorites were always the desserts. It always seemed amazing to me that she could take very little and make something that tasted so good. I think that is where I found my love for cooking. Fancy was not my nature, but simple and down home has always been the way to go.
I have a wonderful husband and four wonderful children who know from years of experience that not every recipe is a winner. When deciding what to call my first cook book, I turned to them for a good title. Sweet Blessings (available on separate page) is truly what the name suggests. Even though we live in a health conscious world today, everyone loves a sweet treat now and again. These recipes are some of the most loved and asked for over and over again ones that I have found or created throughout the years. I truly pray that you enjoy them as much as we have and I hope you hear, “More please”, when next you set them in front of your family or friends.
May the blessings of life always be sweet, God Bless.
